Device Networking and Online Data Acquisition

Are you planning to optimise the work flow and processes in your renal department? We suggest to centralise and automate the data acquisition of the dialysis treatments by using the nephroCOM Networking System (nephroCOM NWS).

With the hardware and software components of nephroCOM NWS the dialysis devices, blood pressure screens and scales will be connected to the local area network of your clinic. The online data transfer enables an automated logging of all weight, blood pressure and dialysis treatment data from the devices into the central nephroCOM NWS Server. As soon as a treatment is completed, all relevant data is automatically transferred in XML files, which can easily be imported into your medical information system.

nephroCOM NWS helps optimising the work flow and the processes in the renal department. The system improves the documentation of the treatments and makes it safe and reliable. And last but not least, the system helps saving time in comparison to the manual logging of dialysis treatments in handwritten protocols, followed by manual recording of the relevant data into a computer system.

Visualisation and administration of treatment data

For displaying and recording the treatment data, vital parameters and events which are permanently collected from the devices, the nephroCOM NWS provides all appropriate programs; application software which is easy to use and which is adjusted to the requirements of the staff and the consultants. Furthermore it can easily be configured in case of special demands in your clinic.

The main application that displays the treatments works like a panel. The screen shows an automatically refreshed overview of all currently running treatments in the renal department, the intensive care wards or the outposts. In facilities where a lot of patients are treated at the same time the display can be limited to certain rooms or patient groups. The progress of the dialysis is shown with information such as the weight before and after the treatment, the according measurements of blood pressure and pulse, the device parameters such as ultra filtration, blood flow and TMP as well as the device alarms.

The nephroCOM NWS Hardware and Software Components

In order to link machines and devices to the server, the ConnectivityBox (CBox) connects the serial interface of the device with the Ethernet. In cases where wiring is not possible, wireless connections can be used. The patient is identified on the scales and on the dialysis device by using a chip card which is inserted into the card reader of the CBox. In addition, the box enables a connection of medical devices to monitor blood volume or devices with automated profiling of UF rate and NA+ level.

The CBox is the central hardware component of the nephroCOM NWS. Despite its small size, the box contains an integrated computer with processor, RAM and a Linux operating system. The box automatically personalises the collected data to the identity of the patient whose card is inserted. The data is then bundled into packages or snapshots, encrypted and transmitted to the server in preset intervals. This leads to less network traffic and more security. One huge advantage of the box is, that in case of a network or server breakdown no data will get lost; the memory of the box lasts for numerous treatments. And as soon as server and network are available again, all stored data will automatically be transmitted to the server and saved into the database. The ConnectivityBox can easily be mounted on the devices or fixed to the wall.

In addition to the main application software described above, the nephroCOM NWS provides numerous additional programs. A server application software takes care of the collection of all data from the various CBoxes, which is then consolidated and saved into the nephroCOM database. A different tool converts and copies the data into XML files. And two particular programs are used to write and print the patient’s chip cards.
